Slot RTP and Volatility: How to Pick Slots That Clear a Bonus Cheaply

Strategy & oddsPublished July 29, 2026·3 min read·Re-checked today

Clearing 35x wagering on a 94% slot costs twice as much as on a 97% slot. The game you choose is the biggest decision in bonus play — here is how to make it.

Bonus wagering is a volume game, and the cost of volume is the house edge. RTP (return to player) sets that edge: a 96% slot keeps 4% of every spin on average; a 97.5% slot keeps 2.5%. Over CA$10,000 of wagering the difference is CA$150 — real money, on a decision most players make by thumbnail.

RTP: the expected cost per spin

RTP House edge Expected cost of CA$7,000 wagering
94% 6% CA$420
96% 4% CA$280
96.5% 3.5% CA$245
97.5% 2.5% CA$175
98% 2% CA$140

Note that many providers ship the same slot at multiple RTPs (Pragmatic Play and Play'n GO in particular) and the casino chooses which to install. Check the RTP in the game's info panel at the casino you are playing, not on a review site.

Volatility: the shape of the ride

RTP says how much you lose on average; volatility says how. A low-volatility slot pays small wins constantly — your balance drifts down smoothly at the house edge rate. A high-volatility slot pays rarely and big — your balance plunges, then (sometimes) jumps.

For bonus clearing, volatility matters because of bust risk: if the balance hits zero before wagering is complete, the bonus is gone. Low volatility clears wagering reliably with a modest expected loss; high volatility either busts early or finishes with a big balance.

A reasonable rule: medium or low volatility when the bonus is the bulk of your bankroll; high volatility when you have cash to spare and want the upside.

Slots that are usually allowed and high-RTP

Casinos exclude some high-RTP titles from bonus play. Commonly allowed and worth checking at your site:

  • Pragmatic Play: Gates of Olympus (96.5% version), Sweet Bonanza (96.5%), Big Bass Bonanza (96.7%) — medium-high volatility.
  • Hacksaw: Wanted Dead or a Wild (96.4%), Chaos Crew (96.3%) — very high volatility.
  • Nolimit City: often excluded.
  • NetEnt: Starburst (96.1%), Blood Suckers (98%) — the latter frequently excluded.
  • BGaming: Elvis Frog (96%), Aztec Magic Bonanza (96.6%).
  • Play'n GO: Book of Dead (96.2%), Reactoonz (96.5%).

Check the bonus terms' excluded-games list before you start; a spin on an excluded game can void the bonus.

The max-bet rule and bet sizing

Bonus terms cap the bet (typically CA$5–7 equivalent). Within that, size bets to the volatility: CA$0.50–1 on high-volatility titles with a CA$300 balance; CA$2–3 on low-volatility. The wagering calculator turns your bet size into a spin count and time estimate.

A sample clearing plan

Deposit CA$200, 100% match, 35x bonus → CA$7,000 wagering, CA$400 balance.

  1. First CA$4,000 on a medium-volatility 96.5% slot at CA$1/spin (4,000 spins, ~8 hours over several sessions). Expected cost ~CA$140.
  2. Reassess. If the balance is above CA$300, finish on the same slot. If it is below CA$150, drop to CA$0.50 spins to extend survival.
  3. Never exceed the max bet; never touch excluded games.
  4. On completion, the balance is cash — withdraw or move it to Originals with rakeback.

Rakeback on bonus play (Rainbet pays it) reduces the expected cost further — see the Rainbet BOOST20 guide.
